He is originally from Kentucky and has a Masters degree in literature from the University of Kentucky and a Masters degree in library science from the University of Illinois. His first novel, The Survivors, was a finalist for the Lambda Literary Award. His third novel, Lord Byron’s Prophecy was a finalist for the Shirley Jackson Award and the Colorado Book Award. John Durgin is a proud active HWA member and lifelong horror fan. Growing up in New Hampshire, he discovered Stephen King much younger than most probably should have, reading IT before he reached high school—and knew from that moment on he wanted to write horror.

Matthew Mercier is a writer and storyteller living in the woods of the Hudson Valley. He’s worked as a tour guide at the Mystic Aquarium, run a youth hostel in Albuquerque, been slimed as a salmon packer in Naknek, Alaska, provided showers for homeless men on the Bowery, and proudly served three years as head docent and caretaker for the Edgar Allan Poe Cottage in The Bronx. He earned an MFA from Hunter College where he taught writing and children’s literature. Atom stepped from the cargo ramp into a gust of oven dusty air. Squinting against the blown grit, he raised a shielding hand and took stock of his surroundings. The polarized atmosphere shaded everything a reddish-grey, haunting the eyes with ghostly images of absent colors. In the back of his mind, Atom tried to adjust to the lack of blues and greens.

“Why don’t you inform the others of your side business?” Kozue asked as Atom retreated up to the hatch door at the top of the ramp.

“I don’t want them involved,” Atom replied as he punched through the hatch.

“But they could help.”

Atom glanced at Margo. Looking up from the pram, she beamed a smile.

“Dada dirty.” She clapped her hands and shook with a gleeful giggle.

With care, he wrapped a mesh hood around her head and fixed a filter over her mouth. She reached up to pull the hood off, but Atom took her hands and set them in her lap.

“Leave it,” he commanded, and Margo complied. “We’re going outside, Go. It’s dusty so let the hood be.”

Margo nodded. She turned her attention to looking through the polarized lenses covering her eyes. With a furtive glance to Atom, she reached up and adjusted the hood. Atom raised an eyebrow, but he saw the smile lift her cheeks beneath the light material.

Satisfied with Margo’s elemental protection, Atom punched the hatch open again and pushed the pram out into the gusting wind. As he tromped down the ramp, he wrapped a light scarf around his mouth and nose.

“They could help, but they could also prove a liability.” He continued the conversation as he slipped into the crowded street at an easy stroll. “Plus, I work better alone.”

“You take Margo.”

“Truth, but she’s blood. She’s a part of me.”

“She’s a child, Atom.”

“And I trust her more than either of the other two in a fight. I know what she’s capable of.”

“There’s something frightening in that statement.” Concern laced Kozue’s words. “Especially since one of your crew is a known gunfighter with a rap as long as my hair.”

“You don’t have hair.”

“I did, and you remember.”

Atom fell silent. His feet pressed forward through the dust laden throngs. He had lined up a buyer on the slow orbital descent, but he preferred meeting face to face, a habit from his days as an admiral.

Following Kozue’s directions, he wound his way through the thriving spaceport to a well built residence, nestled between the slums and the affluent.

At his first knock, a young servant woman opened the door with a genuine smile

“Make yourself welcome,” she said as she slammed the door against the wind. “I will let Staroste Moncrief know you have arrived. He was pleased and surprised by your request to meet in person.”

“I aim to surprise.” Atom smiled as he pulled his scarf down. “In a good way of course.”

The servant bobbed her head and disappeared through a door at the rear of the tall entryway. As the door closed on the servant’s heels, Atom unwrapped Margo and surveyed their surroundings. From the outside, the building appeared squat and plain, but the interior told a different story. The entrance hall showed modest opulence. Built of solid sandstone bricks, artisans had carved delicate floral scenes of off-world Edens into every surface. Soaring twenty feet overhead, a broad, tinted skylight allowed a comforting warm glow to enter and offset the cool, misted interior of the building. Underfoot, a thick carpet of intricate weave covered the broad sandstone blocks of the floor in an inviting manner.

“Welcome, Mr. Ulvan.” The servant opened the doors to the interior and motioned for him to follow. Atom picked up Margo and strolled after the serving girl.

Zach is a stay at home dad who has graduated from writing during naptime to using school hours as creation central. He lives in Western NY with his wife, a mermaid, a cheetah, and a stormtrooper.

When not playing board games with his children or game group, Zach Winderl can most often be found expanding the tales of Atom & Go or people watching for literary inspiration. He draws inspiration for his character Margo from a mash-up of his three children and while he can’t claim to be a gun-slinger, many of Margo’s experiences have actually happened.

In this excerpt from Call of Hywilkin, Azi is not too pleased to be woken up by Flitt…

 

“Aaaaaziiiiiiii,” Flitt sings my name just above a whisper. Before I can do it on my own, her tiny hands push one of my eyelids open. I try to squint and blink as she grins at me, her nose nearly touching my eyeball. Her sparkling skin assaults my vision in the darkness of Rian’s room and makes my open eye water.

Careful not to wake Rian, I extract my hand from his and nudge Flitt away.

“What?” I push to her, yawning and nuzzling back into my pillow. “It’s the middle of the night.”

“Yeah, so what are you doing in here?” she asks. The light behind my eyelids fades slightly and I feel her settle on my shoulder. Even in my mind, I can hear the hint of disgust in her tone. Without thinking, I push myself away from Rian in the bed so we’re no longer touching. Flitt and I hold our breath as he stretches and turns so his back is to us and he’s facing the wall.

“That’s better,” she pushes.

“I was sleeping, Flitt,” I complain with a soft groan. My head aches. I consider ignoring her and snuggling up to him again to try and go back to sleep, but now that she’s here, that’s pointless. When Flitt wants something, it’s best to just let her do what she’s going to do.

“I want to talk to you. Come with me!” she says, tugging my hair.

“Where?—”

She doesn’t let me finish. I feel myself falling away from the bed and the warmth of Rian lying beside me, and I squeeze my eyes closed as she pulls me through the Half-Realm.  We land on a soft bed of moss and I curl into it, knowing without looking that she’s brought me to her grotto in Kythshire. The trickle of the little waterfall and the chimes tinkling in the willows have a dream-like quality to them, making it easy to pretend I’m still sleeping in Rian’s room with his arms snug around me.

“Wake up!” she chirps, darting around me. “Come on!”

“Why?” I groan again and sit up with a scowl. “What’s going on?”

“I missed you, that’s all,” she twirls prettily in front of me and flutters her wings, and I blink rapidly to adjust to her brightness.

“Wh—?”

“Ah, ah! My turn for a question!” she giggles.

“Nooo,” I fall back into the moss and cross my arms over my head to shield my eyes. “Not that.”

“Come on!” She lands on my elbows and I bat her away. “Azi!”

I yawn.

“Azi!”

“So ask it, then!” I growl into the crook of my elbow.

The Keepers of the Wellsprings Series

When I started writing this series, I really wanted to tell a story that was rich with fantasy, but not overly dark or mired with war and violence. I wanted to show the light side of fantasy: the cheerful, magical, uplifting side which I always drink up whenever it emerges in a story, and which always seems to be so fleeting in fantasy tales. I wanted to tell a story that would capture the hearts of young and old alike. Don’t get me wrong, my books aren’t void of conflict and evil. They tell of uncomfortable moments. There is violence and wickedness, but it’s those moments in my stories which are the fleeting ones. This series is appropriate for all ages, but I recommend 13 and up due to some violent themes. There is no sex, swearing, or excessively graphic violence in the Keepers of the Wellsprings. Throughout the series, you’ll encounter daring sword fights, violent magical moments, and a few quick deaths.

About the Author:

Missy Sheldrake is an author/illustrator who has been conjuring images of fairies in one form or another since she was very young. The wind in the trees and the rich scent of forest earth are her most treasured sources of inspiration, and on most mornings you will find her wandering the wooded paths, dreaming of the next adventure she hopes to put to the page.

Missy was born in Connecticut and attended Western Connecticut State University, where she earned a Bachelor of Science in Art with a concentration in painting and illustration. Even then, in her free time, she was writing. She moved to Northern Virginia several years ago and lives there now, on the outskirts of Washington D.C., with her true love and their son. She published her first novel, Call of Kythshire, in March of 2015 and intends to keep writing as long as the fairies allow it.

The Official Launch of Horror Haiku and Other Poems! #OctoberFrights Day 2

On this second day of the October Frights Blog Hop, I am officially launching my new book of horror poetry, Horror Haiku and Other Poems, so today I give a peek at this delightfully dark book. And now a bit of how the book came to be...

This compilation was born from the murky recesses of social media (otherwise known as Twitter) and the blood-dripping delights of #HorrorHaikuesday. As part of that weekly event I had written many creepy poems in the haiku style, so I took those bits of verse, mixed in a few more longer style poems, and pulled Horror Haiku and Other Poems out of my publishing hat. The book contains thirty-eight haiku style poems and eighteen longer form poems to form its black innards, along with some appropriately spooky accompanying photos.
