October Frights Day 2: Scarecrow

A little creepy story for you today...

Original Image by Screamenteagle from Pixabay

Scarecrow

The air smelled of damp earth and moonlight glistened off the dying corn stalks. I shivered when the cold wind hit my face. The field seemed to stretch for miles, dozens of decaying plants and a grassy meadow beyond. I didn't recognize any of it, but it felt familiar. Something else felt familiar too.
I was scared.
Fear cramping my gut, I crouched behind the withering stalks to hide from… I wasn’t sure. I slowed my breathing, peering between the vegetation, staring into the shadows and the shifting moonlight. I listened, but heard nothing. Slowly I rose and glanced towards the distance, wondering if I could run.
Where? Where would I run?
A dark shape caught my attention. Something stood at the edge of the corn rows. As light drifted into the gloom, I saw outstretched arms, a figure wearing a straw hat, stuck on a pole. I sighed in relief. Just a scarecrow. Then I frowned.
Funny, I didn’t notice it before.
I tried to look away, to search for an escape, somewhere to run, but I kept staring. It drew me in, this black silhouette of a raggedy man stuffed with straw.
Wait, did it move? Must have been the wind.
Except there was no wind.
I shuddered, unable to break my gaze from the scene. Its spindly arms grasped the pole and thrust itself off, the scarecrow landing on the ground with a rustle of grass and a faint thump. I whimpered as it turned and I saw its contorted face and black eyes. I shivered at the sight of its lopsided grin.
I’m dreaming, I must be dreaming.
Straw crackled loudly, too loudly, and the creature lumbered towards me, arms outstretched, fingers curled like claws. Bile and terror surged in my throat but I couldn’t move. It lumbered closer and closer, my brain screaming, but my feet refused to budge.
Run, damn you, run!
But I stood, as immobile as a statue, until I felt the thing’s breath on my face. It stopped,  somehow staring with black button eyes. A hand lifted, touching my shoulder. My body went cold and rigid and I screamed. When the sound of my fear faded, I heard its raspy voice speak, even though it’s painted smiling mouth didn’t open.
“Come with me.”
Only then did I bolt, wrenching away from its grasp, stumbling over my feet, racing through the dusky field and across the moonlit meadow. Running, running, always the dim edge of the field in sight, yet…
I glanced back. The scarecrow stood in front of the corn rows watching me. I tripped, falling to my knees. For a moment I closed my eyes. When I opened them I was back among the corn, the scarecrow a foot away.
What is happening?
The plants rustled and the scarecrow moved, kneeling down beside me.
“Stop running. Accept what is to come. What you lost.”
“Accept what?”
“You know.”
I shook my head, terror consuming me. The thing reached out a hand, but I shrank back. If it touched me again, I was done. I knew that.
“Stay away! Stay away!”
I crawled on all fours before scrambling to my feet and racing away from…
I don’t know. I don’t know.
Whatever the thing was it would be the end of me if I let it near. It’s words triggered something in my head, a voice, almost like a hazy memory.
Time of death, 1:59 PM.

That's it until tomorrow, remember to hop on over to check out the other participant's offerings as well. And come back tomorrow for my dark poetry corner.

Halloween Week: The Weeping Lady

Welcome to Halloween Week! This year I'm doing a monster theme, and to kick things off, I'm showcasing a new freebie I have, my short story The Weeping Lady. This is a ghost tale loosely based of the White Lady and La Llorona folklore. It was previously published by Xchyler Publishing as part of the Beyond the Wail: 12 Grave Stories of Love and Loss anthology. So prepare to be haunted...

The Weeping Lady by A. F. Stewart

Eva has mother issues.

And now she has a missing sister.
Rushing home to help with the search, she tumbles into family secrets, local legends, and worst of all, a ghost that haunts the nearby river. What connection does she have to the lingering spirit? Is the ghost really responsible for her sister disappearance? What horrible mystery surrounds the truth about her birth mother?  Can Eva confront her tragic past and save her sister? Or will the ghost finally claim its own?

Download from Prolific Works

Here's a little snippet:

Eva Douglas was headed home.

And she wasn’t happy about it.

As she neared the town limits, Eva manoeuvred her car off the road and parked in the shadow of the forest. Over the purr of the still-running engine, she debated with herself, hesitated, and stared at the outlying reaches of her childhood. Through the early morning sun glinting past the windshield, she could see the edges of Ashford, her quaint, picturesque hometown, that perfect hamlet she thought she left behind. Instinct urged her to flee, to turn around and drive back to university, back to her newfound sanctuary.

If only her sister hadn’t gone missing.

The Haunting Season by Michelle Muto

Be careful what you let in…
Siler House has stood silent beneath Savannah’s moss-draped oaks for decades. Notoriously haunted, it has remained empty until college-bound Jess Perry and three of her peers gather to take part in a month-long study on the paranormal. Jess, who talks to ghosts, quickly bonds with her fellow test subjects. One is a girl possessed. Another just wants to forget. The third is a guy who really knows how to turn up the August heat, not to mention Jess’s heart rate…when he’s not resurrecting the dead.

The study soon turns into something far more sinister when they discover that Siler House and the dark forces within are determined to keep them forever. In order to escape, Jess and the others will have to open themselves up to the true horror of Siler House and channel the very evil that has welcomed them all.

#OctoberFrights: After Death

Welcome to Day Three of the October Frights Blog Hop.

Today I have two flash fiction stories about death, and the consequences about lingering beyond your allotted time. Enjoy...

Leftover

I died yesterday.
A heart attack, I think. I remember a pain in my chest, down my arm, and not much else. I saw a flash of a hospital, maybe an operating room, and a voice saying, “time of death, 11:04 AM”.
That’s when I woke up here.
In my own bed.
Yet… it’s not the same place.
It is so silent here, a vast empty nothing of stillness. And I have no voice. I can’t talk, I can’t cry, I can’t even scream. The world around me is painted in shades of grey, a shrouded space of perpetual twilight. The air is cold and heavy, and it feels like it’s pressing on me.
I can see the other world, the world of the living I suppose, like watching through dirty glass. I can see my husband crying when he’s alone. I think I can reach out and touch him. I know I can, I can feel it. I want to reach out… I need to reach out…
He’s right there.
Waiting.
I need to feed.
I’m so, so hungry.

~*~

Eternal

Death hates me.
Why else would I still be here? Waiting.
When I’m finally ready.
Perhaps it’s my own fault, a taste of my own feckless behavior. So many times I smiled at him, made him wait for me, promised I would come to him. Then I slipped by him with a smile, another deal for more years, another life stolen to prolong mine.
How many millennia did I cheat him of what I owed?
I lost count. I’d wager he knows.
I thought forever would never get stale.
I had such hubris.
Youth and beauty for eternity, laughing at Death as he chased me.
Always winning.
Always laughing.
Until it stopped being amusing.
I thought the game would last.
I thought he loved me.
Until he refused to play anymore.
Now I am alone.
Waiting for Death.
Why won’t he come for me?

Drabble Wednesday: Creepy Christmas

So after a hiatus last month due to the flu and other things, Drabble Wednesday is back.
And today on Drabble Wednesday I’m celebrating the Horror Holidays. Do join me for three tales of blood and jingle bells…

The Christmas Party

Come in, come in. The more the merrier, isn’t that what they say? We have food and drinks waiting for you.
The guests shuffled in, ushered along by festive Christmas music. They moved slowly through an open door, and saw a wondrous spread of hors d'oeuvres, champagne, cocktails, and more. They smiled.
You see, just what we promised. The best Christmas party of your life.
The new arrivals mingled with the earlier crowd. Behind them the doors closed. Their hosts raised a glass in a smiling toast, vampire fangs gleaming.
Did we mention? This will also be your last Christmas.

~*~

The Ghosts of Christmas

Scrooge wasn’t the only one you know.
And it wasn’t like the story at all. Those ghosts weren’t trying to help. They showed us visions, that part was true, but they tempted us, dangled desires and wealth like bangles on a pretty Christmas tree. Whispered in our ears about what we could have, if we just agreed. They came to both of us, Scrooge and Marley. They wanted the partnership, you see.
But old Ebenezer was smart.
He didn’t listen to those ghosts. He rejected their promises.
He changed.
Me, well, I was greedy. I acquiesced.
I sold my soul.

~*~

And for the last offering, (with apologies to Clement Moore), here's a skewed bit of the cherished holiday, coming in a slightly longer than 100 words…

A Visit from St. Nicholas

'Twas the night before Christmas, when all through the house
came the smell of dead creatures, yes, even the mouse
The stockings were shredded, all tatters and bare
amid ruins and bloodstains and the odd broken chair

The children were slaughtered all snug in their beds,
with most of their brains gone away from their heads.
And Mama stopped screaming when she bled from her throat,
while I fled that room as quick as a goat.

And behind me he came, with, oh, such a clatter,
A’ growling and snarling, and after brain matter
I ran for my life, a Christmas most foul,
With zombie St. Nicholas here on the prowl

Halloween Week - Drabble Wednesday: Infernal Ghosts

Welcome to the Halloween Week Edition of Drabble Wednesday. Today I bring you spectres, spooks and phantoms from the deepest, darkest bowels of the underworld...

Twilight Whispers

The clouds hung the sky in muted grey, settling low to meld with the horizon. The gloom of dusk stole the last burnished rays of sunset and crept up to meet the clouds. The air spread a leaden cast, a hint of dampness clinging to a vigorous wind.
From the old burial ground, with its sunken earth and broken gravestones, came a scratching, rasping, slithering sound. A noise of crawlers and claws, of burrowing and hiss. Dirt bulged and ground erupted, in a spray of grime and worms.
And momentary silence.
To be broken by skittering whispers.
Death is coming...

~*~

Autumn in the Country

The cold howl of the not-yet-winter wind as it blew through the bare branched trees. The smell of leaf rot and smoke, of apple cider. Sweet memories of my uncle’s home, the grand Marbury Estate.
We visited him every autumn, my parents and I, each weekend until the last week in October. I so enjoyed the visits, I never questioned the reasons.
Until it was too late.
Why didn’t I ask? Why didn’t I wonder?
They might be alive if I had.
Oh, what that thing did to them...
What it made me do...
I don’t want to kill again.

~*~

Mislaid

Another teenager has gone missing.
The third one in eight months. Plus two more from last year.
I hear the murmurs from the townsfolk as they pass, the scared voices wondering what happened to the boy and the others. Some say they were kidnapped, some say crazy Old Man Potter killed them, others think they simply ran off. Teenagers do that, you know.
Of course, they’re all wrong. They never left. All the town’s missing are so close.
You see, each missing teen trespassed in the abandoned Pritchard house.
My house.
So I tucked them away.
Even ghosts need company.

Prepare for a trio of macabre tales full of bloody chills and spooky thrills.

Plus, there are Giveaways!

Now on with the stories...

Be Very Quiet

The sound of rapid breathing is very loud in my ears.
It’s mine.
I steady myself. I have be quiet. No noise as I make my way through the house. I don’t want to call attention to myself. I just need to find the front door. I’m close, I can feel it. It won’t be long. I’m nearly there. I can do this. Step by silent step, until...
Wait. I can see a faint sliver of light reflecting through the front hall window.
And a crawling shadow.
Yes. I’ve found her.
My hand tightens on the knife and I smile.

A Little Rhyme, A Little Blood

“Hickory dickory dead,
Daddy did hit his head.
I smashed and I bashed
as Mother did gasp,
and over the floor he bled.”

Amelia giggled as she finished her rhyme, while her trussed up mother whimpered in the corner.
“Did you like my poem, Mother?”
No answer.
Amelia stepped over her father’s corpse, and walked through his brain matter to kneel beside her mother, a bloody crowbar in her hand.
She repeated, “Did you like my poem, Mother?”
This time a shaky voice answered, “Yes, Amelia. It was very clever.”
“Good. I don’t want to have to kill you yet.”

~*~

By the Moon

Do you see me?
I want to pretend I don’t hear the voice, or see the dark haired woman at the edge of the mist and moonlight. But it won’t matter. She’ll still be there... haunting me.
Why won’t she go away?
I felt sorry for her at first, always hovering around the gravestones after midnight, calling into the darkness. How could I not respond to her? I thought if I talked to her, she’d find peace.
Instead she found obsession.
Now I can’t be rid of her.
What’s a ghost to do when the living won’t leave them alone?

Drabble Wednesday: Changing Seasons

In honour of the first Drabble Wednesday for October, come join the telling of a few tales of the seasons...

Winter Chill

The first nip of true cold in the air, a shiver that slowly burrows under the skin and buries itself. That’s when you know. Winter will arrive soon. If you haven’t prepared by then, it’s too late. By that beginning taste of winter, your stores should have been gathered and stocked.
And your final arrangements reviewed and amended if necessary.
Because you never know who’ll die.
Maybe no one, if the winter’s mild. The food will last, and the snow won’t smother. That’s what you hope for. That’s why you pray to the gods.
But sometimes, they want a sacrifice.

~*~

Spring Thaw

The birds are chirping outside the kitchen window these mornings, a sure sign spring is coming. And I saw a crocus poking out its green shoots by the doorstep, so I expect the last of the snow will be melting soon, though it’ll be a while farther up the mountainside.
Does my heart glad to see the change in season. It’s been a hard winter with my husband gone, even if I’m happy he ain’t around no more.
I just hope I buried the body deep enough. Wouldn’t do to have it popping out of the ground in the thaw.

~*~

Summer’s End

A sultry wind blows through the cherry trees, rustling the green leaves, and the ripened fruit. Soon it will be time for last harvest, and the leaves will turn to vibrant warm colour. But, for now, the final bit of summer lingers.
These are beautiful moments, this suspended measure between seasons, between the thriving and the waning of nature. You can feel them mesh and merge, separate and struggle, the everlasting war twixt life and death.
Like me.
No wonder I feel a natural kinship.
I died in this cherry grove. Now, as a wandering ghost, I live here eternally.
