The Haunting Season by Michelle Muto

Be careful what you let in…
Siler House has stood silent beneath Savannah’s moss-draped oaks for decades. Notoriously haunted, it has remained empty until college-bound Jess Perry and three of her peers gather to take part in a month-long study on the paranormal. Jess, who talks to ghosts, quickly bonds with her fellow test subjects. One is a girl possessed. Another just wants to forget. The third is a guy who really knows how to turn up the August heat, not to mention Jess’s heart rate…when he’s not resurrecting the dead.

The study soon turns into something far more sinister when they discover that Siler House and the dark forces within are determined to keep them forever. In order to escape, Jess and the others will have to open themselves up to the true horror of Siler House and channel the very evil that has welcomed them all.

The Haunting Season can be found at these retailers.

October Frights Drabble Wednesday: Ghosts

Welcome to the October Frights Blog Hop!

Keep the lights on for this Drabble Wednesday, as October Frights brings us four more tales of ghostly phantoms…

Death Kindly Stopped

“Are you tired of running yet?”
I looked at the kindly old man sitting on the bench beside me. Dressed in rather scruffy tweeds, he needed a good suit. “Do I know you? I feel like I do.”
“We met once. Are you tired of running yet?”
“Was I running? I’m not out of breath.”
The edge of his mouth twitched. “Oh, but you are. Out of every breath. Forever. That’s why I’m here.” He laid a hand on my shoulder. “I’m Death. Are you tired of running yet?”
I looked him in the eye. “No.”
I start running again.

Harbinger

In a nameless town, a pale flower grows at the edge of an old cemetery.
Velvet, alabaster petals kiss olive green leaves, swaying gently in the summer breeze. Its life spans a single day, once a year, before its bloom expires beneath the full moon.
With mortality, its petals flutter to earth, crumbling into blood red dust, scattering its touch among the buried dead. Summoned, shades and spectres arise, and the once silent graveyard pulses with howls and moans, and the rattling of bones.
In that nameless town, on this moonlit night, the dead come back to visit the living.

The Candle in the Lantern

The candle flame in the lantern flickered, as it did each night, shining its beacon from the tree branch where it hung. Below it the river gurgled, flowing eternally to the vast sea, and the deep scented wildflowers bloomed, even encompassed by the damp grey mist and coal black night. The clearing lay hushed, the air still, the glimmering light casting shadows over earth where few human feet willingly trod.
For the candle burned to lure the unquiet dead, its wispy smoke a summons, a binding that restrained ethereal forms within the river glade and far away from the living.

The Painting in the Hallway

Do you ever have that feeling? The one where you’re positive someone is standing behind you, but no one is there? I get it all the time, in the front hallway of my mother’s house. Whenever I stand next to that creepy painting of my grandmother. It’s probably my imagination, like the way the portrait’s eyes follow me as I move.
Still, I don’t like the feeling.
I don’t like the thought of being watched by someone I can’t see.
It frightens me.
But do you know what really scares me? It’s this sensation of someone’s hand on my shoulder.

Drabble Wednesday: Alliteration, Hauntings, and Superheroes

Another Drabble Wednesday dawns, with more short fiction tales. This time I present ghosts, hapless superheroes, and some alliteration...

A Preeminent Presentation

King Pietro of Luckland posted me a plea to perform my prestigious presentation of pirouetting parrots at the palace for Princess Patricia’s private party.  The prior player, Pied Piper’s Parading Poodles, postponed due to pooped puppies.
So, I pedalled post-haste to the palace to be pushed public.  My parrots plied their pirouettes perfectly, to precious pretty praise from prepubescent party-goers.  We preened properly, proud to proffer prosperity to the princess’s party.
Post party, I pecked at puffy profiteroles and peppered pretzels, plugged into the procession past the princess for a pleasant prattle before parting with the pack for our pad.

Tonight on Haunted Kitchens

The following paranormal account is based on true life events...

Tonight we bring you the story of a home where no liquid is safe from spirits.  One evening a man named Grant (not his real name) walks to his refrigerator looking for a snack, only to find a mysterious puddle.  His tea inexplicably transferred from its jug on the refrigerator shelf to the floor.  Next, his coffee vanished from its pot, never to be seen again.
Is it ghostly phenomenon or somehow explainable?
Tonight on Haunted Kitchens, you decide...

And tomorrow night, the tale of the toaster that pops itself.

Captain Blinky

“Hello, my name is Captain Blinky and I’m a useless superhero.”
As one, the support group chimed, “Hello, Captain Blinky!”
Wanda Wonderful, the group therapist, leaned forward.  “Tell us about your inadequate superpower, Captain Blinky.”
“I turn invisible for a fraction of a second when I blink, as you undoubtedly noticed.  But I can’t maintain the invisibility.  Constant blinking doesn't work.  Nothing works!”  A sob caught in his throat.  “I couldn't even get work as a special effect.  Why can’t I be a regular superhero?”
“There, there, Captain, let it out.  You’re among friends.  We are all useless superheroes here.”
