October Frights Day 4: Dark Drabbles

Today's offering is small but spooky, with three drabbles...

Knock, Knock

The grandfather clock in the hall ticked in unison with Sally’s fingers as she drummed her digits against the stone fireplace. She barely breathed, her only movement beating against the hearth.
Tick, tap. Tick tap. Tick, tap.
She crouched by the iron grate, staring into the cold ashes. She murmured, repeating the same soft words.
“Can you hear them? Knocking, knocking at the mirror? When it breaks they’ll get out.”
Suddenly her hand stopped and Sally looked up. Somewhere in the hall, a tapping sound reverberated in unison with the ticking of a clock.
And somewhere glass began to crack.

 Underneath the World

Can you feel it? That sensation of peculiarity? A strange reverberation of the uncanny running beneath your feet. A thought or two, perhaps the earth is alive with… something? Your step quickens as the twilight deepens. You avoid shadows, and the thickening mist. Who knows what eerie perils lurk in the hidden places? Best not indulge any curiosity. You want to make it home alive.
And there you are, hand on the door, home. Safe at last. All imagings left in the dark.
Yet… are they truly imaginary?
What if it is all real?
What if there is no escape?

Aftermath

In the boneyard, the ashes rained down, velvet grey petals coating the bare ground in a soft layer of soot. Above, the sky still flared with hues of red and purple and the few remaining trees were shrivelled and cracked.
The automatons sorted piles of remains, as they always had, more broken skeletons stacked weekly as the mechanical retrievers brought in the flesh-stripped corpses. It was the way of things now, the clean-up. Years since the end, but the routine went on, a cycle of programming and efficient energy cells.
One apocalyptic war, billions dead, and only the machines remained.

So that ends today's post. Be sure to hop on over and check out the offerings of the other participants as well. Here's the list.

Drabble Wednesday: Nasty Things

Today on Drabble Wednesday, take a journey to the darkest underbellies of worlds beyond this realm...

Assassin

The oblique glances, the careful sidestep to avoid me on the street.
I see it. I see it all.
They are afraid. As well they should be, for I could snuff out their pitiful lives with ease. I am the creature society shuns, the thing those supposed upstanding denizens consider undesirable.
Until they need me.
Then they slink into my presence to toss their gold at my feet and give me the names of those they want killed. They hire their assassin and I do my work.
Then I kill the true undesired and drink my fill of their blood.

Imagined Things

Skitters in the shadows, incoherent whispers lost in the dark wind, thumps that make you walk faster, have you casting glances into the night. You scoff, while shivering. Your pulse races as you scold yourself. Only in your imagination. Not real. Just the mind playing tricks.
What if it isn’t in your head?
What if something truly lurks in the dark?
Because we do.
Bumps, bangs, and bogeymen. Skulking, creeping, coming out to play when the sun goes down.
We are behind you. Following you.
Waiting for the right moment.
And you won’t be going home tonight.
Or ever again.

The Ruling Elite

Everyone falls from grace. Sooner or later.
Riding high one day and in the gutter the next. I’ve seen them all.
The nature of this cesspool kingdom. Kings and queens think they can hold on to their power, but it don’t last. They lose their grip on the crown and they’re gone. And someone else’s ass is sitting on the throne. Until they get the boot. Or the ax.
Yeah, they all fall out of favour.
Or get pushed.
That’s where I come in. My specialty that.
For the right amount of gold.
A gal’s got to make a living.

Drabble Wednesday: Dark Roads and Wrong Turns

Today, on Drabble Wednesday, I bring you hungry things, temptation indulged, and the horrors under the stairs...

Angels and Bunnies

I think I’m dead. I’m staring at an angel. Sitting on a swing holding a bunny.
“He’s my pet. And you’re not dead. Not yet.”
Huh? She knew what I was thinking?
“Oh, yes, your thoughts are clear. But I’m no angel.”
Oh. I must be dreaming.
“In a way. You’re hallucinating from my venom.”
Venom?
“Yes. Injected when I bit you. You took a wrong turn last evening, walking in the park.”
Bit me? Walk? Wait. I did take a walk.
“Yes. And crossed my path. Too bad for you. I’m hungry, you see. And so is the bunny.”

Seduction

Why did I listen?
Why did I leave the village with the wizard?
It wasn’t his handsome face, or his beautiful voice, or those honeyed words he whispered in my ear. I knew he spun me lies, that he meant none of the promises spilling from his silver tongue.
I followed him anyway.
I knew he’d lead me where I wanted to go. Take me to the place I needed to be.
I used him.
Now he’s a bleeding sacrifice on my altar, and I’m in the arms of my god.
Death has finally accepted my offering.
Accepted my love.

The Bottom of the Stairs

“Don’t go downstairs.”
“Stay away from the lower chamber.”
“No one who wanders down there ever comes back.”
The warnings echoed in my head as I stood at the top of the staircase. The steps spiralled down into darkness. It wasn’t hard to believe the stories of unnatural creatures living beneath the castle proper.
If only I hadn’t dropped the letter.
I didn’t want to go, but I needed to retrieve it. I started downstairs, my tread echoing off the wood. I sighed when my foot touched the bottom.
Find the letter. Climb back up.
Then something grabbed my ankle...

Halloween Week: Rebirth

Something’s Coming…

Rebirth

Evening raindrops clung to a broken spider web, and fallen leaves held water like tiny crumbling cups. Silence draped across the forest; the animals fled at sunset when the sky shed its first tear. Even the carrion birds flew away, and the rodents scampered deep down into their holes.
The animals knew.
No moon graced the shrouded sky, and no starry luminosity scattered the inky air swallowing the trees. Fog crept like silky spiders, thick and velvet over the ground, obscuring earth and flora. Grey met black and swirled, mingling, melding in a darkling kiss.
And the night waited.
It waited in stillness, the breath of air grave and expectant with longing. It waited cold and cavernous, as if time gave this occasion pause. And then… past the midnight hour it came. A faint noise from beneath the onyx soil. Scrabbling, scratching, fingernails in the dirt.
Digging upward.
The ground trembled, softly, gently, as if a lover’s touch caressed it. The wind sighed, dancing among the trees and twirling with the hoary mist. Slowly, slowly, the earth gave way, the soil parted, cracked, and a bony hand burrowed out from beneath the world. Then a shoulder, and a head, and the thin skeletal remains of what once was human.
It cried.
A hoarse, guttural pain.
It hungered.

Drabble Wednesday: Islands

On today’s Drabble Wednesday we journey the seas, to remote and strange destinations, to rocky lands that protrude from the ocean. Today we journey to the islands…

Skull Island

Somewhere in the distance, the drums beat…

The sound of the machete breaks the silent air, and the dense jungle falls before the blade. The weary party of travellers trudge forward. Again the swish of the machete, the tramp of footsteps; it is the only sound they have heard in days. No birds, no animals, not even the wind. Only eerie quiet broken by their own actions. It has unnerved them.
Even more unnerving, they do not know where they are going, or why.
Their minds are clouded, but that is to be expected. They are wandering spirits, their discarded bodies rotting in jungle they forever walk.

The Far Island

Come my children, I will tale you a tale.
An ancient story, of an island lost among dreams.
Far across the emerald waters, encircled by the mists of time, Azuroth awaits. A place of unimaginable beauty and serenity, they say it is older than the world, more aged than the stars. That it abides half in and half out of what we call existence, and calls to all creatures with its siren song. Azuroth is the island of eternal bliss.
Still, this peace has its price.
No living soul has seen this paradise.
To reach its shores, you must die.

~*~

The Rock

It juts from the water as a monument, stone and earth that fought its way from the clutches of the sea. It stands alone, surrounded by vast churning ocean, forever at war with the elements. It is a solitary island, a rock on the median of nowhere.
One might assume it is unimportant.
Such assumptions would be wrong.
For within its hollow heart, its blackened core, lies a spawn. A beast conceived of fire and stars, of desolated planets and annihilation. A creature sleeping, growing, waiting for its birth.
Waiting for the day it will fly free unto this world.
